Wellington
Activity Center
We're just
plain WAC-ky, and pround of it. When's the last time you visited
a town of less than 2,500 people that had a bowling alley, basketball
courts, weight room, pool room, indoor 1/4 mile walking track, public
access computers, air hockey, meeting rooms, and people too friendly
for words?
Our community
has something called the Wellington Activity Center, or "WAC"
as it's known to locals. The incredible thing about this facility
it is community membership supported, that it operates in the black,
that it boasts state-of-the-art facilities, and that it shows how
folks will support a community center when it's done right.
But there's more
to the story: the WAC didn't just appear by magic. In fact, it started
out as a deal "gone south," as they say. A company moved
into Wellington to process cotton into textiles, and in order to do
business they built a giant manufacturing facility. Unfortunately,
after too short an interlude the company went out of business, and
Wellington was left with a giant, unoccupied building.
Up to the plate
stepped the Zephyr Foundation. Begun by the White family, local philanthropists
in Collingsworth County, the Zephyr Foundation brainstormed with the
city to see if there were another use that the big, empty building
could be put to. The idea of a community center was hit upon, and
a million dollars later Wellington had something that would be the
envy of communities many times larger.
When life gives
you lemons, don't just make lemonade: make a community center! Visit
