Alumni Reunions

Wellington High School

Every year on the first Saturday in August the Wellington Ex-students return to Wellington to join their classmates and friends at the annual Wellington Ex-students reunion. The week-end starts with the block party around the courthouse square on Friday night. There is lots of food, live bands, music, local entertainment, a performance by the current cheerleaders from Wellington Jr. High, the Varsity cheerleaders from Wellington High School..

On Saturday many classes hold special reunions at various locations around town and visit with old classmates and friends. The Community Building is the place to be for the annual Ex-students luncheon and more visitation, renewing old friendships, looking at old annuals, picture taking, and a brief business meeting of the association.

Traditionally the weekend concludes with a dance at the pavilion in the Wellington Fairgrounds on Saturday night. Usually a band with local ties (many band members are ex-students themselves) is featured at the dance.

In past years the ex-students weekend has included a community theater presentation of "The Dastardly Doctor Devereaux" , the Texas Photo Booth, a sockhop, Saturday morning coffee and showing of a special movie that was popular when a reunion class (50 years ago) was in high school. Other places of interest during the reunion weekend are a visit to the Rocket House, the High School, Field House, Commons area at the High School gym, Collingsworth Museum, Wellington Activity Center, Pioneer Park, and the Ritz Theatre.

Booker T.Washington School

The Booker T. Washington School was the first brick school building built for Negro children in West Texas.  In 2008 it was selected as a historical site in Texas.

The Ex-students host a bi-annual reunion in June on Father's Day and "Juneteenth" weekend.  The next reunion will be in June 2019.  It is a time for all former students to bring their family and friends to Wellington and reflect on those special school days at "Ole' Booker T."

The reunion starts on Friday night at the Bura Handley Community Center with a reception.  The Panthers have a class roll call for classes from 1930-1965 and former students answer the roll.  There is also a talent and fashion show that evening.

On Saturday morning the reunion memorial service is held at the school yard.  This is followed by a parade which ends at the fairgrounds where a pep-rally and picnic are held at the fairgrounds pavilion.  Saturday evening there is a Gala and Banquet held at the Bura Handley Community Center, at which former students speak .  Scholarships are awarded to alumni children and grandchildren.  The evening ends with a Gospel Concert.

Sunday the reunion ends with church services and a luncheon.
